LESSON 08 · INTERMEDIATE · SHORT LESSON
Pressure-Relief Valves
A relief valve directs flow to the return line to limit pressure within the design limit.
What is happening technically?
Continuous relief flow creates energy loss and heat. The allowable pressure is limited by the circuit's weakest component and the manufacturer's design.
In practice
If a load will not lift, compare readings with design values instead of arbitrarily raising settings.
Educational diagram only; not a manufacturing or safety circuit. The pilot line illustrates the line style only.
Symptom → check → solution
If movement, pressure or temperature changes, first identify the conditions in which the symptom occurs. Record existing gauge readings. Base maintenance or circuit examination on causes confirmed by measurements.
